The Stag Ride design looks as though it has been taken straight from the pages of an old woodland storybook. A majestic stag carries a child safely through the forest after a day of berry picking, with the little basket still in hand as they make their way home.
There is such a gentle sense of movement and storytelling in this design. The book suggests using a special fuzzy embroidery thread for the stag's coat, which gives the finished stitching wonderful softness and texture, although regular embroidery floss can also be used.
The sample in A Handmade Winter is displayed in an old wooden drawer, which turns the finished embroidery into such a unique little piece of artwork, but it could just as easily be framed in a more traditional way.
