This is such a special Christmas project. The Festive Table Runner feels almost like a little Christmas story unfolding across the table, with four beautiful appliqué scenes created from Silke Leffler's whimsical illustrations. This is another pattern designed by Andrea of Willow Cottage, and one of my favourites that I contributed! It is so fun and full of whimsy!
Across the centre are two enchanting gingerbread houses, a Christmas Bundt cake displayed on its cake stand, and a glass cloche filled with heart-shaped cookies. Each motif is built from a wonderful assortment of Acufactum fabrics, giving you lots of opportunity to play with those tiny prints, dots and beautiful coordinating basics.
The appliqué scenes are arranged on a soft Watercolor Green background and framed with a narrow taupe dot border followed by the beautiful Sweet Christmas print. The book uses raw-edge fusible appliqué, with the pieces stitched close to their edges once they are fused in place. You can even add tiny buttons to the gingerbread houses if you'd like a little extra embellishment.
One of my favourite details is the row of prairie points at each short end of the runner. They create such a lovely little bunting effect and make the finished piece feel so much more special than a traditional rectangular table runner.
The runner is lightly quilted around the appliqué motifs, with the book showing a diamond quilting design in the background. You can then add as much or as little detail quilting as you like — outlining the houses, adding window panes or even stitching along the icing on the gingerbread roofs.
This would be so beautiful running down the centre of a Christmas table, across a sideboard or even over a large kitchen island. It has that wonderful European Christmas-market feeling — festive and whimsical, but still beautifully handmade and timeless.
