This Santa wallhanging was designed by Andrea at Willow Cottage (that's me!). I was inspired by the adorable and whimsical characters in Silke Leffler's art. After asking her if it was ok with her to replicate her art in fabric form (and receiving approval), I set forth to create both the wallhanging and the tablerunner featured in this book.
The Santa Wall Hanging feels like a little scene taken straight from an old-fashioned European Christmas story, with a wonderfully whimsical St. Nicholas carrying a basket filled with heart-shaped Christmas cookies.
Santa is created with raw-edge appliqué, using a beautiful assortment of Acufactum fabrics to build all of the tiny details of his coat, face, basket and surrounding motifs. Small embroidered details are added afterwards for his eyes, rosy cheeks, hair and buttons, giving him so much personality.
The appliqué is centred on a soft green background and framed first with a delicate taupe dot and then with the beautiful Sweet Christmas fabric. One of my favourite details is the row of folded prairie points along the top and bottom — they almost look like little festive bunting and give the finished wall hanging such a special shape. Three discreet hanging tabs are incorporated along the top so it is ready to display once finished.
The background is quilted and additional outline quilting is added around Santa, the stars and appliqué details. A tiny red satin bow tied onto Santa's basket is the sweetest finishing touch.
This would be beautiful hanging in an entryway, kitchen, sewing room or tucked into a Christmas vignette each year. It is the sort of handmade piece that becomes part of your family's Christmas decorating for years to come.

*KIT INCLUDES all of the fabrics needed for the wall hanging front, appliqué pieces, borders, prairie points, hanging tabs and backing, along with quilt batting, fusible web, red satin ribbon and the embroidery floss needed for the stitched details. A hanging rod or dowel is not included.
You MUST have a copy of A Handmade Winter to complete this project. The appliqué templates, pattern and sewing instructions are found in the book and are not included with this kit.
