From Nicki: "The quintessential Christmas scene; a row of pretty gingerbread houses decorated with icing, candy canes, gum drops and peppermints. The design is printed onto a piece of gorgeous thick antique hemp to fit a rectangular cushion size of 20” x 12.5”. You are also provided with the linen for the back of the cushion with enough fabric to make an envelope closure.
There are suggestions on how to stitch the houses together with instructions on how to make the candy canes and I have included lots of gingerbread house images to inspire you. I originally created the design as a Christmas stitch sampler; it is the perfect piece on which to use lazy daisy, chain stitch, satin stitch, split stitch and so on. The idea, though, is that you work the embroidery however you like.
I selected a colour palette that I particularly liked for the gingerbread houses and you will be provided with five skeins of thread; You are encouraged, though, to add whatever colours you like. If you can cope with metallic thread then a little silver (for those silver balls you can decorate cakes with) would be beautiful in amongst the white.
These kits are produced in small batches as it is important that the fabric is sufficiently heavy for a cushion cover; being antique hemp or linen this is something that I need to carefully source. Of course if you prefer not to make the cover, the embroidery works beautifully as a framed decoration or as part of a wallhanging if that’s more your thing.
